Hi -- we pups don't have names yet but we are sure looking for a good home when we turn 8 weeks old.  We have no idea who our parents are.  We are black and tan, and we dream of being big and courageous when we grow up.  Of course, we don't know what size we will be or what our adult bodies will look like.  Won't you please apply to care for one of us or maybe two of us forever and forever!   Because we think maybe we are "Notweilers", our adoption fee is only $175.

Annabelle was rescued from a kill shelter this past winter by a family, only to be abandoned by them when they moved. Annabelle was left tied up outside to brave the elements all by herself. Poor baby, but by looking at her you would never know it. She is one of the sweetest dogs I have ever met. She just wants to be with you every where you go, they should have named her Shadow. Annabelle was well accepted into my pack (3 personal dogs and foster dog Roxy). She gets along well with them also. Annabelle can be seen at Hickory Petsmart events and other events coming up this fall, please see the events section of the web site for further details. Please consider taking this lover home with you, she is by far a lover not a fighter.

Hi!  My name is Arrow.  I just came back from being with a trainer.  Boy!  The pace I was kept at was grueling and I learned a lot.  I have very good manners now.  I do still jump up when I'm excited but I can't help myself.  I love having someone pay attention to me and give me some love.  I do well in the yard with other dogs and on leash.  I like to play with toys and have gotten 8 year old Carolina to be my playmate.  She may be old but she likes to toss a ball around and get some exercise.  I also room with Digit and Trent.  My foster mom and dad say I'm a happy boy.  If I could giggle and laugh -- I would!  I really am a nice boy and deserve a secure, forever home with someone that has rottie experience.  Won't you please apply to take me home?

Tricks:  Sit, stay, good night ( crate) excuse me ( he gets out the way) come slow down ( when walking)
Likes:  Loves nothing more then to be with his people, loves to steal his foster sisters half eaten cow hide. WALK ME WALK ME WALK ME.
Dislikes:  Being alone for extended periods of time ( i work 8 hour days and he is fine for that time) but getting better
Activity Level:  Calm loves walks but is content just laying around all day
Notes:
Bear loves to cuddle up with his people and if you are not around something with your smell will suffice. He loves to go for walks and runs and always walks and runs right next to you. He is a very submissive boy and loves everyone and every thing. Bear is also very gentle and cautious around little children. He is extra careful around my son and will even sit down or lay down so that he can be petted by my son.

Bear will do well in just about any household whether you have a active lifestyle or just a homebody. He would not do well in a house that will need to crate him for long periods of time. He does very well outside of his crate he just finds a comfy spot and sleeps right there till you come home.

Houston man accused of beating this poor dog (article pasted below)
This dog was in foster care and the woman cannot keep him, he still needs help.

In the above picture he weighed 74 ponds, he now weighs 99.3 pounds. He has been around my rotties and had no problem. I have no idea about cats but I did take him to a vet with several cats roaming the office and he could care less.

A Houston man is accused of beating his own pet. He's the first person to be charged under a new Texas law that makes it easier to punish someone accused of animal cruelty.

He is a young Rottweiler that is learning life. It's a life that that nearly ended six days ago in a northeast Houston yard. Nearby neighbors called police because of the dog's wild cries.

"The dog was suspended by its neck by [a] metal chain, choking to death and the guy was beating it with a broken baseball bat," said Lt. Mark Timmers of the Houston Humane Society.

The chain the Humane Society said was embedded in the dog's neck and the broken baseball bat are now part of the evidence in this case. Four dogs including the Rottweiler were confiscated at the scene Saturday. The owner was arrested under the new state felony animal cruelty law. The DA's office accepted charges without reservation.

"Under the new law, the owner can be prosecuted if he kills or causes bodily injury to an animal in a cruel manner," said Harris County Prosecutor Belinda Smith. "In this particular case, this crime happened the day the new law came into effect."

Especially fortunate for a dog that has a name now, Bolo, and a kinder, gentler future.

Bolo is considered evidence in the case too. The owner of the dog is still in jail and will be given a psychiatric evaluation. If convicted, he could face up to two years in jail and a $10,000 fine.

We have details about the law. It gives greater protection to domestic animals like dogs and cats. The old law didn't make a distinction between live stock and pets. This law defines what cruelty is and it's not just torture, it is any kind of cruelty. It also makes it easier to get an indictment against someone accused of abusing an animal.

Carolina is a wonderful, older dog.  She came to our home very skinny and with the appearance of having many litters of pups but she has bounced back to a healthy weight and vitality.  She jumps straight up in the air when she sees her person.  For a doggie that is her age, she is remarkably energetic and playful.  She makes pretty smiling faces.  She delights in sitting by your side and waits patiently for a hand to touch her head.  Small kids are no problem with her.   She would be a great dog for a family with children or for an older person because she does not jump on you -- she is very well mannered.   Won’t you please let her be your buddy!  She so deserves a permanent, furever home.

Notes:
Update: He does very well. We currently have a Large Male Rhodesian/Hound mix, Medium female Brendled Pitt/Chow, Small male Jack Russell, and a puppy make Boxer/Terrier mix. Everyone is acting like a family. The initial meeting being that Cleatus is male and unfixed made Jackson (Rhodesian mix) become more alpha with two minor conflicts but no reaction or response from Cleatus and two weeks later we are all living and playing well with each other. Though the jack always had a small dig chip on his shoulder :).

Cleatus is an overly well mannered dog, to be a rescue. He tends toward being quiet and loving when laying around us but very playful around other dogs and has shown little to none aggression. When being disciplined he does not run or show fear. Very well mannered when receiving treats and is starting to grasp the sit and wait for food. He is a pleasure to walk as he does not pull the leash and is comfortable walking beside us. The only quirk is his over interest in our cat (He has shown no aggression towards the cat, but the cat is spooked by being stalked).

Dislikes:
Activity Level:

Notes:
Do like taking long strolls through the neighborhood, or long hikes in the wonderful parks and other NC recreation spots? Cookie never turns down the chance to go for a walk! This affectionate and good natured dog absolutely loves exercise.

He knows how to sit, heel, stay, and come when called. He learned these things incredibly quickly! He is so eager to please! He loves to play fetch with a stick or ball. While he has chased and returned a stuffed animal, he doesn't yet understand what toys are for, but as he acclimates to your household, he will get the idea. Time and praise are just what this boy needs to learn that there is fun to be had with that round object we call a ball.

Like most dogs, he thinks bunnies and squirrels are to be chased away, and will do his best to defend the property from them. He is learning that when the alpha says no, it means they shouldn't be chased. He's housebroken, but does show his subservience like any good puppy would with an occasional dribble. This should dissipate as he becomes more comfortable with the people in his life, and learns that strangers can be nice too. He rides well in the car, and likes to snuggle up and watch television with you.

Will you be the one to turn this underweight, under loved underdog's life around? Cookie is hungry for more than food, he is hungry for your affection.

Take a look at my bio

definitely meant to be!

Please hurry and submit
an application on me
It won't take much time
All I want to be is
YOUR VALENTINE!

Hello, my name is Cooper and I am so looking forward to finding my furever home. I am very eager to please, very attentive, a good listener, a smart learner/easily trained and I can’t wait for your full attention. I know that I would thrive in an environment that would allow for me to be spoiled a lot. While I do not remember too much about my life back in Tennessee, I do know that I need someone who needs me. Why the emphasis on need? Well, I really do not like being alone. While you’re away working or whatever, I am at home just waiting for you to get back and when you do, boy I am ready for us to hang out. I want us to always be together. When you call me, I’ll always be there right by your side.

Not only do I want us to spend lots of time together inside the house, I also want us to spend time together outside. I am hoping that you have a big fenced in yard so that I can play and enjoy the great outdoors. When I am outside, I like to sit and watch people, cars, birds etc. as they go by. It’s kind of similar to how you people sit on your back porch and just relax. I just enjoy being at one with nature.

Besides lounging outside, I would also like some toys. My foster mom is a BABW (Build-A-Bear Workshop) fanatic and she has this really nice boy teddy bear that I would love to toss around. She’s always saying, some day I’ll have my own…maybe even for Christmas. If not, then a soft squeak toy or some soft dolly that I can toss would be nice.

Honestly, more than material things, I want love and lots of attention! That’s what I want the most…for Christmas…I already have my two front teeth. :)

Activity Level:  medium
Hi!  My name is Dahlia.  I just escaped death from an animal shelter that had no more room and my time was up. My pads (on my paws) had been worn down to flesh and I am very interested in any vehicle that passes by so my foster mommy thinks that I may have been dumped on the road by my previous owners. I also have a scar around my neck from a previously embedded collar.

I love riding in vehicles but I like trucks most of all. I am a very good passenger generally but I do like to have a paw or my head on whoever is driving, just to make sure they know I am there.

As you can see from my photos, I’m a large and strong girl with beautiful mahogany markings and a strong build. I am gorgeous; people tell me so all the time!

I am living with 4 other doggies and love it! I love playing with everyone and if they do not want to play I chase around the yard throwing toys and amusing myself. I have a strong prey drive so I like to chase birds and squirrels, and if there are none around I stare at the tree tops and when I think I see something I “grr” and bark!

I am extremely intelligent and eager to please; my new foster Mommy is amazed at how fast I learn! I simply adore being petted and am like a shadow, I must be with my humans…..I even wait outside the shower for my foster mommy!  Do you have a nice home and some time to spend with a doggie like me?  If you do, then I think I am the one for you!  If you want a doggie that adores you and is excited about life that’s me! I am the life of the party even when there is no party!

Notes:
Digit is a sweet dog that would do well with one person and possibly another dog. She tends to ignore other dogs and has actually done well with a variety of dogs that have come to the house. Digit must have belonged to someone that called her to be petted in a teasing manner and then disciplined her harshly. So even though she wants affection very badly she gets scared at the same time when she is receiving it. She would not do well with small children because she may not be tolerant of quick movements made by children. She would make a very loving and devoted dog for the right person. She deserves a forever home where she feels secure and where no one will harm her ever again.

Freedom was rescued from a very small rural shelter. He was kept in a 2 x 3 pen for over 2 months. He arrived at his foster home with no training or manners, just a desire to be happy and loved.

He is very, very active. He does well with the foster's young children however he does not know his own size or strength and may knock a young child down.

With the other dogs (all of his size) he is curious and gets along with them. He is also very curious of the cats and loves to chase them but will not hurt them. It is easy to tell he intends them no harm as his nubb is just a going...

He craves attention and affection. He will be starting obedience training.

She would do well with older children as young children might startle her.

Hi! My name is Henry and I am new to the rescue.  I like other dogs and get along with cats.  I am very affectionate but I need time to get used to you.  Someone was mean to me and I'm a little afraid of getting petted on the head.  I am getting better and better about accepting affection.  If you ignore me, I will come over and lick your hand and move your hand onto my head.  I went for a car ride today to the doctor for my checkup and I decided to lick the back of the car seats and then proceeded to start licking my foster mom.  I really want to be loved with a constant love from someone who will never hurt me.  I wish I could talk to tell you all about what my life has been like but I just haven't mastered human language.  I'm smart and really a good boy.   You could really make a difference in a dog's life by adopting me.  I will be a perfect gentleman and loyal companion!

She still pulls on the leash and just wants to go, go, go as if to explore all before it is taken from her. She loves a soft voice and a loving hug. She does not like raised voices or the broom.

8/8 Update
: Hunter is doing great.  We've recently added a Jack Russell pup, Lucy to the household.  Hunter loves to play with her at 2 lbs 15 oz.... She's quite the wrestle partner!   He's very gentle with her and will roll onto his back and let her chew on his ears and play tug with them. (Who could resist - they are sooo tuggable). When he's had enough he will nudge her with his nose (she goes rolling over) and comes back for more.  He lays down in front of Lucy with her in between his front legs and Lucy plays hit and run.  She chews on him and then takes off and this keeps going back and forth for about 15 min till she poops out. He also likes to groom her by licking her till she's soaked!   He chews on his rawhide and will let anyone (human or canine) near him, we can take his cow hoof away and he just waits for it to be given back.  Hunter is an easy dog to have around you.  He goes into his crate with the verbal command "crate".  He is full of energy and for that reason I highly recommend he be adopted to a family with other dogs and/or kids that have his playful ambitions.  He will be your most loyal companion.

7/6 update:  Hunter is an excellent companion.   He likes playing with Taz ( 10 yo Rottie/Boxer) but she poops out long before he's ready to.  He gets play dates with my two neighbor's dogs (see the pics). He's super sweet and very obedient.  He likes to stand on his rear legs to greet you putting his paws on your shoulders or arms and licks you face or stands there till you scratch his sides.  He does this with my 9 yo and 6 yo - he does not knock them down - he's that gentle.  Hunter loves all kids and any dog that he greets.  He's a win/win combination.  I don't understand why he is still in the rescue ... he may not have the normal looking Rottie face and ears - but he's one of the best behaved dogs I've fostered and so likable by all.   Take a second to check out Hunter's pics and you'll see what a happy dog he is and all the joy he's able to provide to his forever home.

6/3/08 UPDATE:  Hunter is currently living in Va Beach with his new foster family. He has been with us for four weeks and has been a great companion.  He knows No, Sit, Down, Stay(for a little bit), walks nicely on a leash and understands the Heel command.  Plays fetch for about 5 throws and even brings it back. When he's had enough he goes and lays down to catch his breath.  He is very curious with the cat and if the cat runs, Hunter likes to chase!   (Cat does not appreciate the dogs much, so I'd chase him too!)  Hunter is great with my kids ages 8 & 6.  He has a 10 yo  female Boxer/Rottie mix that he plays with for short periods of time, but she's not a whole lot of fun after 15 min.   The neighbors next door have an SPCA Mutt that is about his age and they spend a lot of time playing with each other.   He has the puppy playfulness but is also teenage obedient, meaning he listens half the time..(haha). He's crate trained, but is not exactly happy in it for extended periods of time.  He will take his chews and go lay in the crate and rest with his door open.   He also enjoys sleeping next to our bed at night.  I get a lick or rub from him when he has to go out in the middle of the night.  No accidents in the house.  He will eat food left on the table/counters (don't leave pizza out while going to the restroom, it disappears!) Like all the dogs I've ever owned or fostered.  He is the great protector of the backyard... lets us know when there is a leaf blowing in the cul-de-sac or some folks taking a stroll in the neighborhood.  He enjoys having his ears and chin scratched and is an avid kisser of anyone putting their face near his.  He's a great catch for anyone wanting a playmate and an activity partner.  Hunter has the most adorable ears and facial expressions.  All the kids in the neighborhood enjoy Hunter as he lets them pet him without knocking them over and plays with the older kids who like to rough house.   He's a great addition to any family.

Update: He and the cat have reached a mutual understanding.  If the cat doesn't run then Hunter just looks at him and goes about his business.  Hunter has no ugly bones at all in his body.  He's waiting for his forever home.

Hunter has a wonderful temperament, is easy-going, loves everybody and everything, and tries hard to please.  He is very puppyish, has such cute ways and is quite intelligent. In the right hands he would make a fantastic obedience/agility dog.

Likes/Dislikes: Likes water, balls, bottles, squeak toys, leash walks; Dislikes her belly being touch (she's just too ticklish)
Activity Level: Medium/High
Jenna is a beautiful "dainty" little lady with the personality of a friendly puppy.  She loves to be with "her" person all the time and after a few nudges and kisses to remind you she's there, she'll cozy up nearby.  She LOVES to play with anything she can throw and try to catch-- squeaky toys, plastic balls, or even a bucket!  The water hose or sprinkler is another favorite as she tries to "catch" every water droplet thrown her way.  Jangle her leash and she's running for the door to go for a walk.  Jenna loves to play and gets excited when she's first let out of her crate or brought inside, but winds down after a few minutes.  She needs a home where she can get one-on-one attention, daily walks, and lots of love.

Johnny Angel was rescued in the nick of time. How could anyone think of harming this gentle fellow? He is so nice and pleasant. He's a leaner and just wants to be loved and fed a good meal. He's been lacking some good meals lately because when he came into the rescue his ribs were very prominent. Johnny Angel doesn't want to lead the way and doesn't pull when walked -- he wants you to lead him right into your home and heart!

She is very well-mannered with children. When children go to pet her, she realizes her own size and lies down to make it easier for them to touch her.

"Hi there, my name is Juno and my foster family seems to think I'm the best dog ever! I really like them. They also have, a dog, cat, and 2 little people that love for me to give kisses. I walk very nicely on a leash with them even though they seem to be small for humankind. I think the foster said they are 3 and 5 years old in people years. She praises how great I am with these little humans; however I just love everyone here in my foster home. I really enjoy every day to the fullest because I know how lucky I am to have been saved. You see, I can't hear because I'm deaf. I just need a great family, who can love me unconditionally. My foster mom has already taught me to sit with hand commands, and I plan to learn a lot more. I have great house manners. and just love everyone I come in contact with! If you think you can love me unconditionally than you might just be my fur-ever home. With love, Juno

Keira_main1Name:  Keira | more pictures
Breed:  Rottweiler
Sex:  Female
Approx. Age:  4 yrs
Size/Weight:  Large / 80 lbs
Dogs:  Yes (preferably large)
Cats:  Working on it -- great with cat that walks with us; but still barks at cats on other side of fence
Kids:  Yes
House trained:  Yes
Crate trained:  Yes
Birds:  ?
Livestock:  ?
Tricks:  Fetches balls, sit, down (usually!), and working on "Take it"
Likes:  Likes chasing squires and being cuddled
Dislikes:  Dislikes being left alone (but doesn't everybody!)
Activity Level:  Med-High
Notes:  Adoption donation:  $175
Keira is deaf and so needs someone with a little extra patience and understanding. She is also shy and easily intimidated, except when she is feeling playful! When she is feeling playful she seems to "forget" that she is shy! Keira walks well on a leash for her daily walks, and does very well with the two kitty cats that like to walk with us, although she does still bark at them when she sees them on the other side of the fence. She does not bark at them inside the house anymore (but they still avoid her inside). Keira loves attention (don't they all!) and wants to please if you take the extra time to communicate what it is you want. She is easily overwhelmed when she feels confused so she needs patience! She has figured out how to open the glass sliding door (but not the gate, fortunately!). She does bark at strangers outside (and inside!) when her foster mom is not with her, but is doing better. I think Keira would by nature be the happy-go-lucky type but the deafness combined with a bad start in life have interfered with that. She is very playful though and always SOOO happy when her foster mom gets home each day that, even though she knows she won't get petted until she sits, she just can't contain herself at first! Keira would do well with another dog, preferably one that could 'tell' her what is going on--she really looks to her foster brother for guidance, especially around new people. If he says they are ok then she will be friendly (ie, pet me!). He just isn't as playful as she would like him to be! Keira enjoys her walks but is also very happy running around the yard and would love to have a buddy who would run around with her. (Her 'best friend'--the lab next door--used to come over and play with her until he moved away recently :-(. She was very sad!) Keira does well with other dogs at the dog park and when they come over to play or she goes to their yards to play. She sometimes is a little overbearing with little dogs (except the really energetic ones--then she doesn't know what to think!) She has had a little friction at first with one or two dogs but gets over it and then wants to play. Because she is deaf she does not always realize when another dog is telling her 'enough' so some dogs find her a little annoying. (Her foster mom is trying to help her learn when to back off).

Likes/Dislikes:  playing outside, rolling in the grass, belly rubs, TREATS!
Dislikes: Sharing some toy (learning how to share very well)
Activity Level: Medium. Loves to play outside and inside but very content just hanging out too!
Well here is a BEAUTIFUL girl! Killian had a rough beginning having 4 homes in one month. She loves to play so a dog her size would be better since she likes to run through the grass at jet speed and tuck and roll into the yard. Killian is learning how to be a part of the family. Her previous owners just kept passing her around the family until finally someone contacted NCRR. So she is a little unsure of what is going on….she has come a LONG way though! Finally she is playing with her foster siblings, stretching out on the floor and in her bed, being able to be the puppy she really is! Just a little TLC and time and she has opened up nicely. Killian would do best in a mature home where she can really learn to have fun with her parents, since she is still learning that people are good.  A nice quiet home would be best for her. Do you have the room in your heart to show Killian what REAL love is?? Can you give her the puppyhood she has always wanted so badly?   Killian’s Adoption fee is $175.

Notes:  Needs a new foster home asap
Koby was rescued from a shelter in Orlando, FL due to be put to sleep. He is going to be a very very big guy when he gains all the weight he needs to. He was 80lbs when I got him and needs to gain about 30lbs or more. He is very laid back and good with kids and my 4 other dogs. Koby will let you do almost anything you want and does not seem to be an Alpha male. He walks well on leash and will jump right into the car to go for a ride. He has a very goofy face and acts like he is a 10lbs lap dog. When the other dogs are rough housing he climbs on the couch and curls up in a ball.

Dogs:  Males. Will whine around females
Cats:  Yes
Kids:  Yes
House trained:  Yes
Crate trained:  Yes
Birds:  Yes
Livestock:  Probably
Tricks:  Rollover
Likes:  Car rides, rolling in the dirt, running, walking, relaxing in shade, rubbing her and petting her, loves to be brushed.
Dislikes:  Dislikes being restrained (i.e., vet, grooming), bugs, fire crackers, and thunder.
Activity Level:  Medium to high only if she has not been walked in a day. She loves just lounging next to her foster mom on the rug or the grass.
Notes:
Lexi is a real hero. Her foster mom left a candle burning unattended (which we all know better than to do, but we still do it.) and it caught part of the counter on fire.  Lexi's insistent (Lassie-like) barking brought her back down stairs in the nick of time. Whew!

Lexi is a fun loving girl. When her favorite sheet is laundered, she drags it about until the "scent" is less than Downy fresh again.  Only then will she curl back up with it. So far she doesn't seem interested in chew toys, but that comes with being completely secure in her surroundings. All the NCRR foster dogs have been through so much, and are waiting for you to be their forever loving home—and Lexi is no exception.

Despite all she has been through, Lexi has never met a stranger! Lexi has more than a little Anne Frank in her! She believes that all people are good at heart!  She loves people! Kids and adults! If you're out on a walk, she will bark at the other naughty barking doggies, but only because she thinks she is protecting you. She even likes cats!

She does well when left home by herself. No separation anxiety for this cuddle bug.

Lexi is one smart dog! She obeys commands very well! She walks well on a leash. She knows sit, stay, go to crate, eat, get water, home, "Mommys truck", (rides well in the car), up, down, stand up, walk (heel), and rollover. She is both housetrained and crate trained.  SMART Girl! Will do tricks for treats! She loves to walk or run she has been getting her foster mom back in shape!

It isn't all work and no play for Lexi. She is also a very fun loving dog. She likes to leap in the air when water is jetted out tries to catch it.  She has the most irresistible big brown puppy dog eyes you have ever seen. Just one look and you will be saying "Awwwwahhhh!"

Lexi will do well with any family, large or small, boisterous or calm, adults and/or children. She just wants to be loved and to return that love many times over! Will you make her a permanent member of your family? She will always love you.

Hi there, I like to call myself Majesty or rather, “Your Majesty” but if I like you, you can call me Maj for short. First off, I’m not a fan of big dogs. I’m a little guy and hate having to always put them in their place and such when they get out of line, and while I’ll never admit it, they may have gotten the best of me a time or two when I tried to put them in their place. But anyways, I like to cuddle and have had some rough times so I do get moody from time to time-but we’re working on this.

Right now I’m staying at this place with some other little guys and there’s this mini-human too. He’s ok, but I don’t really see him too often because like I said I do get moody and don’t like rough play so the big human just tries to prevent him from bullying up on me. I like him ok though when I do see him, I usually give some little kisses.

Let’s see, what else about me? Well I like long walks around the block, evening movies, some peace and quiet and little snacks. Definitely give me a buzz if you want to know more or even want to meet me, because I’m one handsome fella who needs a place of his own.

Hi from Maximus and Sophie.  We were pulled from a shelter where we had no chance of leaving alive unless a rescue came to claim us.  Yeah for NC Rottweiler Rescue!  They saved us from a certain death.   We are currently living with a foster mom and dad AND 6 other dogs!   Our previous owner took very good care of us but could not keep us because he is serving our country.  We are BIG GENTLE GIANTS! We love to get on the couch together and just cuddle, cuddle, cuddle, and if you’re a human, oh your lap just isn’t safe….it looks too warm and comfy! We walk VERY well on leash and love to go see the neighborhood, The people at Petsmart love Max because he’s so BIG but shhhh don’t tell him he’s 138 pounds.  Max thinks he is about 3 pounds so we will let him think that!

Would you like to give these big mushy babies a forever home?? You will need a 6-8 foot stockade fence to keep them in as they are pretty agile.  It would be wonderful if they were placed together since they have been living together for a long time. These babies need a new forever home; can you love them as much as they will love you?!?!   Our adoption fee is $350 for each of us!

Precious has a sad story. She was part of a family for 5 years and the family decided they didn’t want her anymore and dumped her at the animal shelter. They never gave a reason why they no longer wanted her. She was adopted by another person and then she didn’t want her anymore because she didn’t get along with her new puppy and advertised her on a free website. She then was given to another person who says she could no longer keep her due to her landlord. Precious finally made it to safety within the NCRR Foster Program. We cannot figure out why she was given up so many times. She is a great dog. She rides well, is obedient, housetrained you name it. Gets along with children. She is just great! Won’t you give her a Furever home?

No one wants me because everyone thinks I am ugly.  Do you think I am ugly?

Rocky Balboa is a survivor like his name implies. He was saved from the brink of death by a kind hearted sponsor. He has a wonderful tail which he wages happily and a great personality. He does well with children and other dogs. Rocky has great leash manners and listens when you tell him no or he’s a good boy for doing a good deed.  He too is in a boarding facility and he can’t understand why he is there and not adopted yet or even taken in by a foster caregiver.  He thinks it is because of his underbite.  It makes him look funny.  He just can’t help the way his mouth is.  He can’t help that he was born with an unusual face.  There's nothing medically wrong with Rocky's mouth; it's just different.  Won’t you take a chance on Rocky Balboa and give him a place in your home?  You won’t regret the love and companionship he so loyally will give you.

Update: Roxy is a picture of health now, is waiting to be spayed within the next few weeks. Still working on gaining weight, she has about 20-30lbs yet to gain.

Roxy's foster mom was contacted by a rescue in VA asking for assistance pulling Roxy from a high kill shelter out side of Charlotte, NC. Roxy's had out stayed her welcome after just 3 days and was going to be put to sleep (unsure on the method the shelter uses). The volunteer and her boy friend drove the 40 mins to get her. They both cried at the sight of her. They were told she was mean, the volunteer replied that she too would be mean if she was pent up with 14 other adult dogs in a 8 x 10 kennel (who wouldn't be). They loaded Roxy in the back of the truck(suv, not pick up truck) and headed home. Roxy was a mess, they believed she might have mange of some sort because she was bald along her spine, hind quarters and rear end. It was also clear she recently had puppies because she had been nursing. When they got home the volunteer's boy friend was  playing with Roxy in the back yard and noticed she was covered with thousands of fleas!!! She immediately was given a flea dip, there were so many fleas it left a ring on the tub.........it was so gross. Zodiac Spot On flea and tick was applied and she was brought back outside, she had to spend the night out side. Couldn't risk giving fleas to the other dogs, and it takes 24 hours for them to all die. Roxy was put in a pad locked kennel under a pear tree with a dog house in the kennel. LOL, in the morning the volunteer went out to check on her and she was missing. She dug out of the kennel and found another dog house to sleep in. Apparently she likes the igloo style dog houses, not the barn ones. She slept in a dog house under neath of the volunteers bed window all night and didn't leave the yard. Roxy was given another flea dip in the back yard that morning at 5am! Then was brought inside where she has stayed every since. She was diagnosed with flea induced dermatitis, NOT mange!

Roxy was brought to Vet's office the next morning because she was clearly ill and had started coughing in the night. Turned out she had pneumonia in all lung fields. She also had fluid on her heart and abdomen, she was almost in heart failure. It was decided at this time that it would be best Roxy stay in NC until she was healthy enough to travel to VA. After many long heated discussions, it was determined by NCRR's board of directors that Roxy will remain in the safety net of NCRR. Roxy resides with her new pack in Hickory, NC. Her pack consists of Daisy Mae 10 month old rottie girl, Maxx 6 month old rottie boy, Zina 2.5 year old rottie girl (foster) and Midnight 2.5 year old lab/pit mix. As Roxy has become healthier she loves to play!! She runs around the yard chasing the other dogs and playing. She gets along with the whole pack, children and doesn't seem to mind the neighbor hood chickens or cats. Roxy will go to bed in her crate but definitely prefers either laying in the hammock or on the couch with her foster mom's boy friend. She is a sweet girl, it was clear she wasn't abused.....she probably got loose and lost. She was loved and knows how to love. Her fur is growing back nicely, expect it to completely fill in.

You can come and see Roxy the first and third Sunday of each month at Hickory Petsmart, she is there from 2-5. Please check out our web site for other special events going on with the dogs. Please consider taking her home today.

Ruby is a gem. What can I say? She is a wonderful dog that deserves the best home ever. She is perfectly housetrained, very smart and just wants to be loved on.  She is extremely fond of children and would be even good around small children because she is not rambunctious or energetic. She is a pretty Rottweiler and definitely is a good pick for a first time Rottweiler owner or a family.

Hi!  I'm Ruby Red.  I used to belong to a family with children and they could not keep me.  I am sad because I don't understand why they took me to a shelter to die.  They said there was nothing wrong with me -- that they just could not keep me.  I don't know if they had financial problems or just moved somewhere that did not allow dogs like me.  I thought I was loyal and sweet to them all but apparently it was not enough.  Now I'm in a boarding facility.  I am spayed, up to date on my shots.   I think they liked to feed me because I'm slightly more pudgy than I should be.  Won't you please come get me and bring me to your home!  Or, won't you please offer to foster me!! I will love you forever and you won't be sorry.

8/8/08 Update: Rusty has been moved from boarding to a new foster home in Va Beach.  He now lives with a Taz~10 yo Rottie/Boxer female,  Lucy ~7 wk old Jack Russell female,  22 mo old foster brother Hunter (also on this site) and two human kids ages 6 and 9.  Oh yea, the Cat - Salsa.   He sniffs the pup - moves on.  He still shows some interest in the cat although I think he was waiting to see if it wanted to run or stand it's ground - he moved on.  He mounted Taz who firmly told him - I THINK NOT- he respects her and moved on to Hunter.  They are very playful of each other, but still trying to determine who is going to be Alpha. Rusty just wants to play so it all worked out.   He rode 3 hours in the backseat of a car and was an excellent co pilot.

He is learning to go into his crate (with out diggin in all four paws) using a very high valued treat - the hotdog!  He wasn't very interested in going into the crate with a milkbone so we upped the anty.  He now looks at me and sniffs to make sure the piece of hotdog is in my hand and then he goes in with no problem turns around and waits for it and takes it very gently too.  He doesn't bark while in his crate nor while outside.  He loves to sniff the backyard and just lay on the deck.

He got a bath on Saturday and stood perfectly still.  Sunday we got the kiddie pool out and WOW,  he loves to stand and play in it.  He literally will put his entire head under water while walking in circles... Looks like we will have a beach water doggie.  He found the dog toy box and went rummaging through it - loves to carry stuff in his mouth and toss it around.  He enjoyed taking an old towel and playing tug of war.  He dragged it around the back yard for about 10 min.  He sweet - just needs to learn some manners - he's very playful and likes to run right up to you and into you on occassion - then he plops down on his back and wants his belly rub.  He loves to kiss and is just a playful acting puppy.  Rusty has a unique personality that matches his color and his cute tail.  I think he should be named Ringo because his tail looks like you could toss rings on it.  He's very smart and while he still needs some manners - he's going to be a great companion dog.

Hi!  I’m Rusty.  I was rescued from a kill shelter in North Carolina.  I’m really a friendly dog that loves to play and be around other dogs and people.  I consider myself a good-looking Rottweiler even though I don’t have those classic lines that some people desire.  I still think I am cute and so do my rescuers.  They think temperament is pretty important and appearance should rank second.  I guess I fit their criteria and that’s why I got saved from sure death.  My previous owners got confused about docking my tail so I have a little bit longer one than usual.  It is sort of nice because I can still wag it like a regular tail but I don’t knock things off tables.  I am currently in a boarding facility and would really like to bust out   I can get together some sheets, tie them up and use them for a rope to get out of a window.  Can you help me escape?  I want to be loved by somebody and in a nice house.

Hi!  My name is Sarg.  I'm an older gentlemen who just wants a nice home where I can be loved and give companionship.  I still like to play with toys but I get a little jealous if other dogs are around and they want to play with my toys too.  I have no medical problems just that nasty thing called age creeping up on me.  My hips are in perfect shape.  The vet says I have a great body even though I'm an old man! But, guess what?  I'm stuck in boarding and I want to be free!  Someone that knows Rotties and can be a leader would be the best for me.  I can be a little bossy and throw my weight around.  If you are a pushover -- then you need to find another Rottie.  I'm sort of like a grumpy bear who needs a routine and regimen, but hey -- I've earned my stripes!  That's why I'm called Sarg.  Please get me out!  I will reward you with kisses and lots of loving if you are my type of person.  Ask for an application and come get me when you are approved, okay?  I'll even mapquest the directions for you (while in the pen, I mean boarding, I've learned some computer skills).

No one wants me because everyone thinks I am ugly.  Do you think I am ugly?

My name is Shenzei. Unusual name for an unusual face and proudly named after a character in the Lion King!  Let me tell you a little bit about me. First off the people that rescued me donʼt really know much about my background. I was at the Wake Co Animal Shelter for awhile when they learned my time was up. Iʼm not sure what that meant but it didnʼt sound good. Apparently people coming to visit thought I was mean-looking and ugly so they passed me over. It hurt my feelings and I got a little depressed. So one day Iʼm just sitting in my small kennel wondering if anyone would come visit me and someone did!! And then I got to go home with her. The car ride was the best! Going to the house was even better. For the first time, I could lay down on something soft, and eat and relax without all the noise and anxiety around me. It was heaven! My rescuer has learned that apparently I did have a family at one time as I do have nice house manners. Iʼm not a barker (which Iʼm told is a good thing), and I REALLY love to watch tv! So if you donʼt have a tv then you need not apply to be my new family. Nothing personal, just a preference.  I donʼt have a lot of hobbies but I do enjoy being wherever you are. I have been called the ʽNew Houdiniʼ since I can escape from a crate but I promise I will leave everything in the house as it should be. I do know to go to the door to go out and go potty and I LOVE to watch whatʼs going on outside.  We are not really sure what breed I am since I donʼt remember my parents but it is believed that I am an Akita-Rottweiler mix. Which might explain my looks but donʼt let that stop you! I may be a little intimidating but I am really a big mushball and would love to find someone to love me back. I promise you wonʼt be sorry! I have LOTS of love to give. Could you be my special someone?

Meet Slim. What can we say? It is totally obvious this poor dog deserves a second chance. She barely survived being starved by her person. It would have been a shame for her to survive such abuse just to be gassed at the shelter.  Slim gets along with other dogs but no kitties. She loves people and loves to go for walks and rides. She walks pretty good considering she lived her entire life on a chain. Slim is currently in boarding and needs a foster home to hang out for a while until she finds her furever home.

Hi Everyone, I’m Titan! My foster mom and dad gave me that name when they got me from the shelter since I was a stray…and had no cool name like everyone else in the joint. I think it fits me.  Life on the streets was hard -- no good chow, no good people, no good nothing!  Even the other dogs weren’t nice to me! Well the new place is SWEET! I get my own room with a TV and a radio, huge yard to run in, lots of good food (I even got some steak the other night WOOHO shhh don’t tell, ok?!). I love to just come in from a hard day running the yard and cuddle up with my foster mom, yup I’m a big cuddlier. I hope my new parents will be too.  My feet are pretty sore from being on the street, and my elbows are a little tore up.  Mom said I need to get a little meat on me because she really doesn’t want to see my bones. So please say you will be my NEW person! From being in the streets and never getting attention I want to be the LIGHT of your life so please let me be your one and only……I just can’t be cheated on with another pup in the house…… The pictures mom posted are from the day she picked me up so I’m pretty skinny but she said in a month or two I should be good and fat! So keep looking at my pictures and see how HOT I’m going to be ORRRRR you could just adopt me and we can do it together. Whatcha think?! Well time to go and take a walk with mom.   PS—my adoption fee is $350!!  I’m well worth it!!

Trent should live with a person who understands that he is shy around new people. He will be a loyal companion to his owner but should not be exposed to many social situations due to his shyness. Trent belonged to someone who lost his life for our country in Iraq. When his owner died, Trent was left at a shelter. He may have been abused in his past while his person was serving in the military. We can only guess.

Trent has received a high degree of obedience training. He will sit, stay, lie down, and eat on command. He requires affection only when he wants it and otherwise, is a very easy dog to keep happy. He does love human companionship but wants it on his terms. Trent has been learning how to play with other dogs but can be a little rough. He will require a special forever home. Do you think you can open your heart to Trent?

Trent is an older fellow that is looking for a home to live out the remainder of his life. He likes to sit and watch TV with you and isn't very active.

Ben Tucker used to work at being a lumberjack in the mountains. He could fell a tree with a swipe of his tail but the newer chain saws did an even faster job. Sadly, he was laid off and ended up in an animal shelter. He was rescued from death by NCRR. Now he spends his time dreaming of the easy life and being the top dog in a one dog home.  He keeps wishing for the perfect home. Please fill out an application and put down Ben T. as your first choice. You won't go wrong -- he's one of a kind and he can't wait to tell all your friends and family about his experiences as a mountain dog -- in doggie-ese of course! Bark!
