Goose - Needs new foster home ASAP Breed: Rottweiler Sex: Neutered Male Age: 2 years (approx) Size: Large Weight: 105 lbs Dogs: Ok Cats: Unsure Kids: Ok House trained: Yes Crate trained: Yes
Update Dec 21: Goose is doing okay. We try to keep him calm and rested but at times his puppy keeps coming out! :) Unfortunately he is limping a bit more today than he has before so we are not sure if he aggravated his tear/knee more. Even with the appearance of his injury worsening, he still ate his breakfast, meds and is drinking water. He still wants to play as he chews on his Kong and throws it up in the air and he wants to nip on our hands as we attempt to pet him. He licks the girls and our 2 year old loves the licks and giggles. She calls him Cheyenne (after our 12 year old Rottie we had to put down last Christmas due to old age and cancer) and says she loves him! So that is encouraging.
Name: Helen | more pictures NEEDS NEW FOSTER HOME Breed: Rottweiler Special needs Sex: Female (spayed) Approx Age: 4 yrs Size/ weight: large/ 80 pounds Dogs: yes Cats: unknown Kids: did ok at Petco event House trained: yes Crate trained: yes Birds: ?? Livestock:?? Tricks: likes to sing with her foster clan. Finding the softest place to sleep. Telling you she's ready to go out or she's ready for dinner or the water bowl is empty. She's become a talker. Likes: Loves her spot on the couch. gravy with dinner time Dislikes: Now that she can see she does not like her eyes messed with. Activity level: low Notes:
Update 2/1/12: Helen is a special needs Rottweiler who is looking for someone who will understand her special needs and love her that much more. She is 6 years old and has one of the nicest personalities you will meet. She loves attention and singing along to sirens. Helen has had a difficult life due to things beyond her control. She was found by animal control living in a garage of an abandoned home. The vet feels she received some sort of head trauma that caused her third eye lids to be stuck shut and some neurological damage to her tongue. NCRR was able to have surgery done to restore partial vision in each eye. She can see directly in front of her but not so much to the sides. Her tongue issue causes her to take longer to eat and drink. Due to her limited eye sight Helen is not an active dog. She will however jump around with her foster siblings on occasion. Helen is also a talker. She always has a story to tell you while you're petting her. She has always been a big hit at adoption events with her friendly personality.
Update 1/2/11: Helen has her days. Every morning and afternoon nap time we end up with the same issue. Her eyes get stuck closed from the "sleep" buildup. It takes a little while to loosen up and she sees fine. She had a blast with the snow last week.
She has started to play a Rottie "posturing" play. It is really hard to see her nub wag because her whole backside wags. She has become more talkative when it's time for her dinner or she wants the water refreshed. She still and probably always will have the same difficulty drinking and eating.
Helen has also decided her place is directly next to me on the bed. She doesn't care which or how many other dogs are there. she sits on them until they leave and the adjusts to get comfortable.
Update 12/22/10: First and foremost, thank you for helping this absolutely wonderful little girl see Christmas. I actually just got back from the vet's office where they removed her sutures. She is doing exceptionally well. Her surgery was actually done on the 9th and I brought her home that afternoon.
We had not left the vets office when it was already obvious that she was seeing. She was moving much more quickly than I had ever seen her. When I got her home, she moved about the house as if to say, "so this is what it looks like." She became fascinated with the ceiling fan and seems to have taken a notice and thinks my Rottie male is cute.
Since the day of her surgery, she has continued to heal and progress to the point that she has been playing with her foster siblings the 4 month old puppy Leo and Penny. She even tries to play with the larger dogs but she isn't as confident in her sight as she needs to be to actually run. She tries though. Her personality has begun to blossom for the second time and she is even more loving and affectionate. She has decided she's a lap dog and likes to sleep in my lap or curl up next to me on the bed. She's also not shy about sitting on any other dog that's in her way to get the prime spot next to me.
Update 12/20: Helen had her surgery and it worked our wonderfully. Even though her vision is not perfect, she can see well enough that she is actually playing with Leo the 4 month old puppy and Penny. The success was obvious before even leaving the vets office. She used to have a slow and measured gate to ensure that she didn't hurt herself when running into things. Now she has a normal gate and while not normal or perfect, she sees clearly.
The first couple of days she was fascinated by the ceiling fan and would look up to watch it occasionally. She's even seen the hawks over head. These things are amazing in and of themselves. The truly amazing thing is that her personality has blossomed even further. She has decided that she is a lap dog and regularly tries to climb in my lap. She is not shy about choosing her cuddle spot on the bed at night regardless of who is occupying it to include me.
She is even more friendly than she was before the surgery and is very outgoing. She was a little love bug and is now a really big love bug. She has also decided that she thinks my alpha male is really cute and likes to get him to play too.
= = =
I'd like you to meet Helen. Helen is a 4 year old Rottweiler female. She was picked up by animal control while she was napping under a house. Most would think that a stray dog may try to run away from strangers. Helen can't do that because she is functionally blind. The red "eyes" in her picture are actually her third eyelids that are stuck closed. The vet believes she received some head trauma that has caused most of her problems. Her previous family didn't take her for vet care.
Helen's issues include a jaw that is not set straight which causes her tongue to not work correctly either. She takes several times longer to eat and drink than a dog normally would. Her eyes are the most obvious problem. Her eye muscles have atrophied enough that her eyes have drawn back. This prevents the entropian(rolled eyelids) from causing her pain.
In spite of all of these problems, Helen is a very friendly, happy and loving little girl. She tries so hard to please and is a pleasure to be around as she shows remarkable resilience and never stops trying to understand. She even tries to play with her foster siblings in the yard. She is also a master of finding soft and comfortable places to sleep and loves to cuddle next to you.
The great news is that her vet exam with an eye specialist went extremely well. Her eyes do work. If you close your eyes and try to walk around, you will understand what Helen goes through. The vet believes that surgery may help restore her eyesight. This is where Helen and NCRR need your help. We need donations to help pay for the surgery that will give Helen a life of sight. Please consider making a donation to help this wonderful girl get to see this holiday season. Rottie Angel: Michael Barker, Tiffany Traylor, Jay Westall
Name: Lexie | slideshow Breed: pit bull mix Sex: Female Age: 4 months Size: small now, will be medium sized Weight: 20 lbs Dogs: Yes Cats: Yes, but may chase Kids: Yes Housetrained: working on it Cratetrained: Yes Birds: unknown Livestock: unknown Tricks: Sit, shake. Likes/Dislikes: Likes to be played with and rough house like most little puppies Activity Level: typical puppy energy - 10 minutes of active play followed by an hour of sleep, then repeat. Notes: Lexie was pulled from the animal shelter when she was emaciated and in desperate need of some TLC. She is now in foster care and getting regular meals and playtime and boy is she loving her new lease on life! She is receiving the love and care that she has so desperately needed and has become a playful, happy, carefree puppy. Lexie loves to play and seems to have an on/off switch – she is either sleeping or running around trying to get her foster siblings to play with her and getting into puppy mischief. She is a gorgeous dark brindle color and everybody always tells her how pretty she is! She loves attention from everybody and is good with kids, although she does still have the playful puppy teeth sometimes. Now all she needs is a forever home to call her own – could that be you??
Name: Melina Breed: Shih Tzu Sex: Female Age: 3 or 4 Size: Small/Petite Weight: 10 + Dogs: Yes Cats: Not sure Kids: Yes Housetrained: yes and she will use puppy pads if she needs to Cratetrained: No Birds: Yes Livestock: Not Sure Tricks: Comes when you call her or snap fingers Likes/Dislikes: getting love and attention, raw hides, baths, hairdos, combings Activity Level: Low to moderate Notes: Throughout her recovery from the harsh conditions she endured at the puppy mill, Mel has been just incredibly strong, positive and full of life. She loves to go prancing proudly and confidently along on walks. Mel is not phased by hardwood floors and actually loves to tap dance on it! She is the perfect mix of lap dog and play dog because she will play when you want to play, and settle down when you want her to. This cute little angel deserves the most loving forever home!
Midnight - more pictures and here NEEDS NEW FOSTER HOME age - ~10mos size: Medium dogs: large dogs - she likes dogs but plays too rough to be safe with smaller dogs. cats: no - would recommend no cats only because she is very playful and looks at cats as playmates. kids: older children - only because of her playfulness and size. House trained: Mostly Crate trained: yes tricks: fetch Likes: playing fetch, chewing on toys and playing with other dogs. Dislikes: being told no. Activity level: High Notes: Midnight is a good dog with potential but is currently in the young willful teenager stage. There is improvement on walking on a leash w/o pulling. Will sit on command and wait politely for the OK to eat meals. She is very playful and until she learns to better control herself I would not recommend her in a house with small children, cats or small dogs. Though she is currently being exposed to all 3 and we're working with her under controlled conditions.
Name: Roma | more pictures Breed: Rottie/Lab Mix with wagging tail (we believe) Sex: Female Age: ~4 yrs Size: Medium Weight: 55lbs Dogs: yes Cats: not tested but can be upon request Kids: Only been around children in public for a short period of time and does fine but may play too rough for younger kids. Housetrained: yes Cratetrained: Currently being crate trained and showing great improvement every day. Will go in there with some treat reinforcement but learning not to bark while in there. Birds: unsure Livestock: unsure Tricks: Will sit and shake. Likes: snuggling up close, walks, playtime, belly rubs, baths (I will even jump in the tub when it’s not bath time because I love the rub down!),chewing on stuffed toys, fetch (and I even bring the ball back to you), laying on top of you thinking I’m a chihuaha and food of course! Dislikes: Not getting attention Activity Level: I get excited and have high energy when it’s playtime but also like to hang next to you and let you pet me as long as you want. Notes: 4/18 Update: Roma is a happy girl. Weve been taking some walks at Falls Lake and she absolutely loves that. We are working on "come" since she does not listen well and is stubborn but she is doing better. She loves barking at the neighbors dogs, any bikers that pass the fence and people approaching the house. She is definitely a good guard dog but I am working with her to not bark all the time at everybody. I think she has anxiety issues as well. She gets so excited when people are approaching or when we go for walks at the park she will get so excited and start whimpering and pacing back and forth. I think she needs a lot of running and exercising to help with her anxiety since she has so much energy to release. Ive attached her latest picture! Enjoy
My name is Roma and I am a miracle dog. A gas chamber exploded and I was given a second chance at life that I deserve. I do fine outside of my crate and am housetrained. I know basic commands such as sit and shake. I behave while the family is gone and do not need to go in a crate, but will if you need me to (mommy is teaching me to enjoy my crate while she’s gone.) I love going for walks and also like to run around the yard. I walk well on a leash and may pull a little bit but a prong collar will cure that. I am a great guard dog and will bark when I see someone approaching the house. I have a little bit of separation anxiety where I whimper when you leave the house but I have this funny habit where I nibble on a toy to help my anxiety. I am currently being trained to get along with other dogs and like being the only one around but with some practice I will be able to live with other dogs. Everyday I am getting better and better at things that they don’t teach you at the shelter. I am overall a good girl full of love and belong in your loving family. Name: Rusty | more pictures Breed: Rottie/Mix Sex: Male Age: 5 approx Size: Med Weight: 87 lbs Dogs: Yes Cats: Yes Kids: Yes House trained: Yes Crate trained: Yes Birds: interested Livestock: unk Tricks: Sit, down, paw, kennel, treat Likes/Dislikes: Hates broom – loves chew toys, playing chase with our Jack Russell, walks, kiddie pool to cool off. Activity Level: Active Notes: Rusty came to Va Beach from NCRR boarding facility. He’s been a happy loving playful dog his entire stay with us. He’s seen fosters come and go and never had any issues. He loves kids but does play rambunctiously, so recommend children use to a large dog or maybe kids big enough so they won’t be overwhelmed with his constant attention and kisses. Rusty was HW pos when he came to us and had been put on regimen of Ivermectin over the first 12 months he had been with us. He’s been HW neg for past two years and will need to be kept on HW just like any other dog. Our household consists of 9 & 11 yo kids, over the years male and female dogs, a cat and constant visiting children. Rusty has never met a human he hasn’t liked nor another animal he didn’t befriend. I believe he is still in foster because he is a mix with narrow white stripe on his chest. His tail was docked extra long and he points with his front paw when he sees something that catches his attention (food!). Rusty loves to “counter surfs” for food left out and plates within his reach so be aware he is a thief! Lol He also steals kisses if you aren’t paying attention. He’ll steal your lap if you let him and he loves to lounge on the couch and catch a snooze. He will let you know in the middle of the night if he has to go potty and comes with sloppy wake up kiss to her face till you get up. Rusty has the most gentle mouth when accepting a treat and has these kind big brown eyes that tells you he is ready for his walks. He’s learned heal when walking and his only issue is he likes to rush out the door, he gets so excited. Rusty is a great foster and deserves to have his furever home who will give him all the love and attention he deserves. He’s waiting patiently for someone to love him for the wonderful companion that he is.
Name: Sadie | more pictures - no one wants me because I am old. Reduced adoption of $75 Breed:Corgi Mix Sex: f Age: a fiesty 9 Size: small Weight: 20 Dogs: all dogs Cats: yes Kids: yes Housetrained: yes Cratetrained: yes Birds: na Livestock: I would say yes Tricks: just being a cutie pie Likes/Dislikes: sadie likes everything and doesn't mind having medicine put in her eyes Activity Level: low Notes: Sadie is an oldie but a goody. Sadie loves to lay down, snuggle up and be as close to the humans as possible. Don't want the dog on the couch? That's okay, she'll lay at your feet and glance up at you for approval and love. This is a no-nonsense, laid back, loving little angel. She will play when you get her excited and don't even think about rustling that treat bag unless you plan to share one with her. Sadie would make a great addition to any household needing to give a little love and get a lot more love in return!
Fundamentals: Sadie is house trained, crate trained, quiet and reserved with other dogs, loves adults, has been introduced to children, and great with first-time interactions with people.
Sadie does require eye medicines twice a day and doesn't mind.
Name: Schatzi | more pictures Breed: Rottweiler Age: 5 yrs Size: Large Weight: 108lbs Dogs: Will do best as only dog or with non-dominant and not bossy/pushy dogs Cats: N/A Kids: Yes House trained: Yes Crate trained: No (we are working on it...) Birds: N/A Livestock: N/A Tricks: Sit, Down, Shake, Roll Over, Leave It Likes/Dislikes: Being pet, scratched, resting with her people/ Being alone, thinking her people have left Activity Level: Medium Notes: Schatzi is a medium aged girl that came to us very stressed out. She had lost her owners (both passed away over the past year) along with losing some older dog siblings and a cat sibling. She was very upset, had lost some weight and had some hair loss/scratching on her butt region. As soon as we brought her home, we gave her a nice bath with a flea and tick shampoo (in case that was the cause) and sprayed her coat with some nice conditioning spray (it was very very dry). We took her to the vet and she is Heartworm negative and she is flea free! That was indeed what caused the hair loss and scratching but our shampoo killed them all and she is fine. Her coat is growing back and feels much softer compared to when we she first got here. She is very friendly with people and would cry a little when we would leave the room and leave her behind (ie: when my husband would leave for work at 5am) She's been getting better at understanding we'll be coming back. She gets very attached to her people. Her first couple of days, she didn't even want to go outside unless I waited in the door for her so she could see me. She is now more comfortable with going out more often and investigating even when I am still inside. She is slowly learning some independence and trust in her people returning to her.
We have crated her when we had to leave, and she broke out. She has some separation anxiety issues, but she is getting better at that, too. We leave her in one of our bedroom with hidden treats to find while we're gone now. She would do best in a home with a family that can give her a lot of love an attention, without having to leave her by herself for longer than a few hours at a time (until she gets even better at handling her anxiety).
She also does best with only non-dominant or not bossy/pushy dogs. Her anxiety has caused her to lash out at one of our dogs because our dog pushed her past her comfort zone. She LOVES to play and run but due to her aforementioned anxiety, she gets very very uncomfortable with dogs that don't know boundaries when playing or eating.
She is very friendly with people and knows many basic commands. She is eager to please and loves attention. On leash, she stays close to her person and is not much of a puller. She will make an amazing companion for a family that will be willing to continue working with her to help her completely overcome her anxiety.
